Patterson’s Market opens.
1882
Officially J.W. Paterson & Company, it is operated by John and Mary Patterson initially from the basement of their home at 104 Jamaica Street. The grocery store moves to 23 Jamaica Street in 1890 and 136 South Street in 1912. One of the oldest family-run stores in Boston, it is leased to Tom Burke and run as Arborway Market in 1945 and closes in 1981.
